An Amex purchase here is an ordinary online card purchase: the card you tap at a counter is the card you type into the desk.
Why Amex is different
Most crypto sites never set up for American Express. We built the desk around it.
American Express works differently from the other networks, and those differences are exactly why so many exchanges quietly leave it off the payment page. Here is what they are, and what we did about each.
Network and issuer in one
Unlike Visa or Mastercard, American Express usually issues the card it processes. That makes its approvals faster to read — one company decides — but it also means most crypto sites never set up for it. We did.
15-digit numbers, 4-digit code
An Amex number starts with 34 or 37 and runs 15 digits; the security code is the four digits on the front. The payment form knows both, so nothing is rejected for being the "wrong length".
SafeKey on the way through
Amex's one-time-code check can appear on any online purchase. Approve it in the Amex app or by text and the order continues on its own; dismiss it and the charge simply doesn't happen.
Wondering whether Amex allows it, or how the charge is coded on your statement? That is the policy side, and it has its own page: American Express & crypto, the honest guide.
Which Amex are you holding?
Charge, credit, business, debit — what changes at checkout
The card family matters less than the kind of card. Each kind posts a little differently, and one of them doesn't work at all.

No preset spending limit, but Amex still sizes each approval to your history — a first order in the low hundreds clears more smoothly than a first order in the thousands.

Not only Bitcoin

Which American Express cards can I use to buy Bitcoin here?
Any card with the American Express logo that is in your own name: the 33 personal, business and co-branded cards listed on this page, and any we have missed. Charge cards, credit cards and the Amex National Bank debit card all work. Prepaid and gift cards usually do not, because they cannot pass the name and address check.
Is there a minimum or maximum Bitcoin order on an Amex card?
The smallest order is $7.50. There is no low platform cap above it: your limit is set by your card's available credit and your account, and current limits by payment method are on the fees and limits page. For orders larger than a single card allows, the OTC desk arranges a wire.
How long does it take to get my Bitcoin after paying with Amex?
Seconds. The Bitcoin is credited to your Anytime Capital wallet as soon as American Express approves the charge. The only wait is your first-time verification, which most people finish in about two minutes.
Will American Express ask me to approve the purchase?
Often, yes. Amex protects online purchases with SafeKey, its version of 3-D Secure, so you may be asked to confirm the payment with a one-time code in the Amex app or by text. Approve it and the order continues automatically. It is a routine security step, not a sign of a problem.
Can I buy Bitcoin with an Amex Business card for my company?
Yes. Business Platinum, Business Gold, Blue Business Plus and the other business cards are accepted. Verify as yourself first, then open an Anytime Capital business account to hold the Bitcoin, invoices and receipts under the company.
What if my American Express card is declined?
Nine times out of ten it is the card, not us: a SafeKey prompt that was dismissed, a billing ZIP that doesn't match, or Amex sizing a first-ever purchase at a new merchant. Approve any pending notification in the Amex app, check the ZIP, and retry with a smaller amount. If it still fails, a debit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay gets you the same Bitcoin at the same speed.
Do I need an account before I can pay with my Amex?
No. Pick your amount and press Continue; the verification that follows is what creates your account. You never fill in a sign-up form, because everything a form would ask for is verified from your ID and card in that one pass.
Can I use an American Express card issued outside the United States?
Yes, as long as it is enabled for international online purchases. Orders are priced in US dollars and your bank converts at its own rate, sometimes with a small foreign-transaction fee. Delivery is instant for every verified customer, wherever the card was issued.
Where does the Bitcoin go once I've paid?
Into the free Anytime Capital wallet that comes with your account. From there you can hold it, sell it back, or send it to any Bitcoin address you control — a hardware wallet, an exchange, a friend.
What does Anytime Capital charge for an Amex purchase?
Card pricing, shown in full before you confirm: you see the Bitcoin you will receive and the total that will hit the card, and nothing is added afterwards. Current rates for every payment method are on the fees and limits page.
